I have worked at my new job 5 months and discovered there is high turnover in this dept because of a clique of 5 people (out of 9). The “ringleader” is an older woman who apparently has to have a target for the clique to dislike. The current target is me, the new person (I don’t care as long as they don’t interfer with my job performance). One of the 5–a student worker–is graduating college and leaving. Not once has she assisted or spoken to me, even when asked and spoken to, but I have heard her make disparaging remarks about me (HR acknowledges there is a problem but since the dept manager takes no action, feels their hands are tied and just keeps transferring people wanting out or accepting resignations.) The dept is taking a monetary collection for a present for this young woman, signing a card, and taking her to lunch. My inclination is to say “No, thanks.” But should I participate just to go along and be a “team player” and not “rock the boat”?

It seems all the olympic class sailors start really early or are born into sailor families. I just moved to a city where I can learn sailing, and I’m in love with sailing already, wish I had started earlier. The boat’s 30ft LWL 25ft with 4000kg displacement. Maximum prop size is 13 in. Hull speed is about 7kts maximum. One engineer says I need to replace the old Watermota 33hp petrol engine with a minimum 28hp diesel. The other avers that a 16hp diesel will be right. Quite a gap in size and price! Cost is of course an issue, but so’s safety. Here’s the dilemma. Would anyone care to make observations?

Last year when a new chief editor took over at Sailing World he started a new program to try to generate some letter to the editor correspondenceby offering a “Letter of the month” contest. Last spring a letter that I wrote was picked for letter of the month and was given a special box for my letter in the issue and it said I would receive soma Sailing World swag. I’m still waiting for it.

I’m planning a sailing trip next year for about 12 people and I’m looking for ideas. We’d like something warm, nice beaches and maybe some outdoor adventure on shore. The trip is probably a week long. As a point of reference, this group sailed a week in BVI last time and totally loved it. Now on to something different. Any thoughts?
